My First Spanish Joke
There is no doubt about it: I am very bad at Spanish. Although I studied Spanish in high school, I never felt much affinity for the subject and always preferred my other classes. Sure, I memorized endless conjugations for an exam. But I never really had a passion for my study of language and, unsurprisingly, I remember almost nothing from my high school days.
I figured I would give it another shot by travelling to Mallorca and living and working at Citric Hotel. After all, Spanish is the national lanaguage of nearly all central and south American countries and is becoming increasingly important in the United States as well. Plus, I’ve always been amused by the blatant overacting on telenovellas and wouldn’t mind understanding what is actually being said. So with dictionary and basic grammar book in hand, I set off to Port de Sóller to be immersed in the language.
So far, things have not been easy. It is very frustrating to not be able to express yourself fully and accurately like you can in your native tongue. What would be a simple question at home turns into an ordeal complete with pantomiming when you lack the right noun or verb. It is also humbling to frequently have no idea what is going on. Despite this, the staff here have been very patient and helpful with me learning Spanish. Using a combination of Spanish, English, hand gestures, and facial expressions we are almost always on the same page.
Because of my struggles with learning the langugage, I have come to appreciate small milestones much more than I normally would. Yesterday, I «got» my first Spanish joke. while washing the dishes I knocked over a small dish and it shattered on the floor. As I was cleaning it up Paco, the hotel’s cook, walked into the washroom. I pointed to the broken dish and mangled the conjugation of «romper», the Spanish equivilant of «to break». He just laughed and said in Spanish «Perfect. Less work for you.» I let out a big laugh that let him know I got the joke.
Sure, it wasn’t the most complicated joke ever. And yes, I am probably years and years away from understanding subtle irony in Spanish. But this experience gave me some hope and reminded me why we bother to study foreign languages in the first place.
