Top 5 Favorite New Foods

Food is one of the simple pleasures of life. And one of the many benefits of travel is enjoying new and exotic fare. Since arriving in Port de Sóller I have had the pleasure of sampling many new dishes and many familiar foods with a Spanish twist. Here are my five new favorites so far.

1) Arroz cubano. When I was in college I got hooked on eggs. They’re the perfect food for students: cheap, nutritious, and easy to cook. I was eating about a dozen and half at the height of my addiction. To keep from getting bored, I rotated through a few standards: hardboiled eggs, scrambled eggs, omelettes. But my favorite was always fried eggs. It’s no surprise then that I love arroz cubano, or fried eggs with rice. I first discovered this dish as an apetizer in a menú del dia. Although this dish does not qualify as authentically Spanish, it comes from a Spanish-speaking country and that is good enough for me.

2) Sobrassada. This stuff is incredible. I can only describe it as a hybrid between pork sausage and meat paste. I realize that may not be the most enticing description but I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Spread it on your bread and you will forget all about butter. One resident here at Citric tells me that a typical Mallorcan dish is bread with sobrasada, sugar, and honey. Sounds a little sweet, but I’ll try anything once.

3) Flan. The simplicity of this dessert is genius. Eggs, sugar, milk. What else could you possibly want? The only reasonable answer: lots and lots of liquid caramel on top. This semi-solid pudding can be found at nearly every restaurant and bar in the area. But it’s hard to beat the fresh batch that can be found many nights at Citric Hotel’s dinner buffet.

4) Oranges that are actually fresh. In the United States the local food movement is becoming more and more popular. Proponents say that eating more foods from farms in the area is better for your health, the environment and your tastebuds. Since I am from Pennsylvania, the phrase «locally-grown oranges» seems like a contradiction in terms. But here at Citric (appropriately enough) we have fresh oranges from the neighboring Soller. Here is an orange I ate half an hour ago…

5) Carne y Queso. Every morning at Citric Hotel’s breakfast buffet you can find freshly-sliced meat and cheese. The variety changes every day. Although I was never a big meat eater at home, I must admit that most mornings I wrap a piece of meat in a slice of cheese and drizzle a little olive oil on top. Simple and Atkins-friendly (unlike many of the other sweet things on the island).

My First Spanish Joke

marzo 30, 2011 Deja un comentario

There is no doubt about it: I am very bad at Spanish. Although I studied Spanish in high school, I never felt much affinity for the subject and always preferred my other classes. Sure, I memorized endless conjugations for an exam. But I never really had a passion for my study of language and, unsurprisingly, I remember almost nothing from my high school days.

I figured I would give it another shot by travelling to Mallorca and living and working at Citric Hotel. After all, Spanish is the national lanaguage of nearly all central and south American countries and is becoming increasingly important in the United States as well. Plus, I’ve always been amused by the blatant overacting on telenovellas and wouldn’t mind understanding what is actually being said. So with dictionary and basic grammar book in hand, I set off to Port de Sóller to be immersed in the language.

So far, things have not been easy. It is very frustrating to not be able to express yourself fully and accurately like you can in your native tongue. What would be a simple question at home turns into an ordeal complete with pantomiming when you lack the right noun or verb. It is also humbling to frequently have no idea what is going on. Despite this, the staff here have been very patient and helpful with me learning Spanish. Using a combination of Spanish, English, hand gestures, and facial expressions we are almost always on the same page.

Because of my struggles with learning the langugage, I have come to appreciate small milestones much more than I normally would. Yesterday, I «got» my first Spanish joke. while washing the dishes I knocked over a small dish and it shattered on the floor. As I was cleaning it up Paco, the hotel’s cook, walked into the washroom. I pointed to the broken dish and mangled the conjugation of «romper», the Spanish equivilant of «to break». He just laughed and said in Spanish «Perfect. Less work for you.» I let out a big laugh that let him know I got the joke.

Sure, it wasn’t the most complicated joke ever. And yes, I am probably years and years away from understanding subtle irony in Spanish. But this experience gave me some hope and reminded me why we bother to study foreign languages in the first place.

A Lazy Day in Port de Sóller

Some days you want to do it all. And, if you’re like me, some days you just want to take it easy and relax. In order to help you plan your lazy day around the Port I have compiled an itinerary of my favorite low-impact activities:

1) Start with breakfast at Citric Hotel. In order to prepare for your big day of nothing you’ll want to make sure you are well fed. Simply take the elevator (no stairs today, this is your day off) to the ground floor and in the dining room you will find the breakfast buffet. For 5€ you can help yourself to meat, cheese, bread with butter, honey, and jams, cereals, yogurt, orange juice and milk. After breakfast grab a locally-grown orange from the buffet, get another morning drink of choice (coffee, espresso, tea, hot chocolate), and plop down on Citric Hotel’s terrace. Enjoy the tranquil view as you get your caffeine fix and a little morning sun. Don’t exert yourself too much: you still have much more sitting to do.

2) Head to the Patja d’en Repic. In order to get a little mental exercise head to the Platja d’en Repic, the port’s sandy beach, and read a book. Fortunately, the beach is only a two-minute walk downhill from Citric Hotel. If you forgot a book, maybe you can borrow one from the bookshelves in Citric’s lobby. The sand and rhythm of the waves crashing on the beach will help you relax after your strenuous breakfast and help you prepare for your next challenge: lunch.

3) Enjoy a long lunch. Head to a restaurant in the Port (or try Sóller) that you’ve been wanting to try and ask for the «menú del día del dia». This daily special is perfect for those who are hungry and in no rush. It includes an appetizer, a main course, a desert, and a drink for a fixed price (usually between 8-12€). If you do this right, you can easily pass an hour or two while you contemplate your next activity.

4) Take a siesta. Hey, when in Rome…

5) Have an afternoon snack with a view. Whether you call it coffee and cake, kaffe und kuchen, or cafe y torta, it’s tough to not be satisfied by this combination of sugar and caffeine in the afternoon. My suggestion is Es Faro, which sits next to the lighthouse on Camino del Faro Muleta. From here you can enjoy an incredible view of the port and sea from way above.

By this point you will no doubt be exhausted from your big day of sitting, eating, and napping. Head back to the hotel, grab dinner and a drink, and make sure to congratulate yourself and your fellow travelers on a job well done.

My Journey to Port de Sóller

marzo 21, 2011 Deja un comentario

Hello everyone! My name is Pat and I am a recent college graduate from the United States. I am currently on a working vacation at Citric Hotel in Port de Soller. I will be sharing some of my experiences with Citric Hotel, Port de Soller, and excursions in Mallorca on this blog. Hopefully my posts will help give you a sense of what the hotel, town, and surrounding areas are like.

I arrived in Mallorca five days ago after a long series of flights that took me from Philadelphia to Palma de Mallorca. From the airport I took a bus (1) to Placa de Espanya, a transit center that connects the metro, trains, and local and regional busses. After a short wait I grabbed an express bus (L211) from Palma to Port de Sóller. The journey was very easy, took about an hour, and cost less than 5€. There is also room on both busses for luggage, so don’t worry about that. The public transportation was also very easy to navigate considering how limited my Spanish skills are.
After a very short walk from the bus stop I was greeted with sight of Port de Sóller in all its glory. It is difficult for me to do justice to the natural beauty of Port de Sóller with words, so I will try to upload as many photos as possible over the next few weeks. I’ve included one here to get your started. In short, the town sits between a beautiful natural port and mountains.

Welcome to Port de Sóller

It was very easy for me to find the hotel since it sits right above the water on the Western edge of the port. This location gives the hotel an incredible panoramic view of the town. Once I arrived I was greeted by Maria Antonia, a receptionist and manager. Maria Antonia speaks English very well (and  humors my attempts at Spanish), so I was set up very quickly. After I checked in, Kyle gave me a tour of the hotel and showed me our room. Needless to say, after a very long day and several thousand miles of travelling I was happy to finally find my bed.

Next time: Hiking around Mallorca.
