Top 5 Favorite New Drinks
In response to the wild success of my “Top 5 Favorite New Foods” post, I have decided to share my favorite new drinks as well.
1) Sangria. You don’t need me to tell you what this is. But you do need to sample a few different types during your stay. Each restaurant has it’s own take on the classic Spanish drink with different combinations of wine and fruit. Try white wine or champagne sangrias offered by many bars right on the port for a twist on a classic.
2) Unrefrigerated Milk. What could be more European than milk sold unrefrigrated in paper cartons? Sure, it looks and tastes exactly the same as in the United States. But sometimes it’s the little things that remind you that you’re abroad. (Don’t worry: all the milk is refrigerated once it has been opened).
3) Túnel. This distinctively Mallorcan anise liquor comes in three varieties: dry, “mix” and sweet (my personal favorite). You can find Túnel at Citric’s bar. Find out more about this unique aperitiv from the makers themselves.
4) Hot Chocolate. Okay, so it’s not like I tried hot chocolate for the first time in Spain. But it’s amazing how much more hot chocolate I’ve been drinking once I figured out the coffee machine makes it. Help yourself during Citric Hotel’s breakfast buffet or take a mug out onto the terrace before bed.
5) Vino Dulce. To me, wine comes in two varieties: red and white (I am admittedly not a wine connoisseur). So I was pleasantly surprised when the owners of Citric introduced me to a very sweet white wine. Hopefully I get to expand my horizons while I’m here and sample a few other varieties of Spain’s famous wines.
My biggest beverage-related disappointment is not being able to find any diet Dr. Pepper so far. But I think I have gained more than I have lost in terms of drinks. And I’m not going to give up my hunt for the good doctor any time soon.
